October 10, 2025 — The Howell Township Fire Bureau is reminding residents to properly recycle their batteries as part of ongoing fire safety and environmental protection efforts. Improperly disposed lithium-ion batteries can pose serious fire hazards when damaged or placed in regular trash.

Residents are encouraged to visit call2recycle.org to locate nearby drop-off sites by entering their ZIP code. Many local retailers, including The Home Depot and Lowe’s Home Improvement, offer designated bins for battery disposal.

Fire Marshal Prochnow collaborated with both Howell stores to promote safe disposal and recycling options for lithium-ion batteries. Batteries may also be dropped off at the Monmouth County Household Hazardous Waste Facility on Shafto Road in Tinton Falls.

The Bureau extended thanks to Howell Township Public Works for creating and displaying signage throughout the community to support this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety.”

“Proper battery recycling is not only about protecting the environment—it’s also about preventing fires before they start,” said Fire Marshal Prochnow.

Residents are reminded: Never place batteries in household trash or recycling bins—always dispose of them safely.
