October 12, 2025 — While National Fire Prevention Week has officially concluded, the Howell Township Fire Bureau reminds residents that fire safety and prevention are ongoing responsibilities that must continue throughout the year.

The Bureau shared its Top 5 Fire Safety Essentials to help families stay vigilant and prepared:

  1. Home Escape Plan: Every household should have an escape plan and practice it regularly so everyone knows what to do in an emergency.
  2. Working Smoke Alarms: Ensure smoke alarms are functional and familiar—test them monthly so all family members know the sound.
  3. Carbon Monoxide Alarms: Install CO alarms if you have any fuel-burning appliances to protect against invisible dangers.
  4. Close Before You Doze: Always sleep with bedroom doors closed; this simple step can delay fire spread and save lives.
  5. When the Alarm Sounds: React immediately—head to your designated meeting place and ensure everyone is accounted for.

The Bureau added an important reminder: “Never go back inside once you’re out—stay out.”

“Fire prevention is not just one week a year—it’s every day,” the department emphasized. “Together, we can make Howell Township a safer place for everyone.”
