Mount Holly, N.J. — October 10: Volunteers for fire departments are declining nationwide. The number of volunteer firefighters fell to roughly 676,900 in 2020, a 6% decrease from the previous year and the lowest number ever recorded, according to NFPA data. In Mount Holly Fire District No. 1 — America’s oldest active volunteer fire company — the same problem is evident. The district is calling on community members to consider serving as volunteer firefighters through their volunteer program at MountHollyFire.org.
