South Burlington, VT — October 7 — The South Burlington Fire Department responded to a second-alarm residential fire at 63 Butler Drive on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, in the late evening. The fire was first reported at 10:31 p.m.by an occupant who called 911 to say that the porch of a two-story, single-family home was on fire.
At the time of the call, Ladder 1 and Ambulance 1 were already responding to another high-priority medical emergency, and Ambulance 2 was also assigned to a separate incident.
South Burlington police arrived first and reported heavy flames, prompting the fire department to request more resources.
Engine 2 arrived approximately 11 minutes after the initial dispatch and found heavy fire burning on all sides of the structure.
Twenty-six firefighters used defensive tactics to bring the fire under control within about 25 minutes. Afterward, crews conducted extensive overhaul operations to ensure all remaining fire was extinguished and to reduce the risk of rekindling.
All occupants safely evacuated the home, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters also managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby properties.
Mutual-aid support was provided by the Vermont Air National Guard Fire Department, the Burlington Fire Department, the Williston Fire Department, and UVM Rescue.
Saint Michael’s Fire Department and off-duty South Burlington personnel also assisted, responding to two additional emergencies during the incident.
The South Burlington Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. An engine remained at the scene overnight to support the investigation and monitor for any signs of rekindling. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are currently undetermined.
