Durham, ME — October 10 — Durham Fire and Rescue attended a second-alarm structure fire that occurred around 3:00 a.m.after Androscoggin County Communications received a call about a garage fire linked to a home located off Stieg Road.
When the Durham Car 2 unit arrived, they observed flames coming from the garage, which had spread into the house. A vehicle that had been driven onto the street was also on fire. As a result, a second alarm was called in to request more personnel and equipment for the scene.
The response needed assistance from departments beyond Durham’s typical mutual-aid area due to the fact that another second-alarm fire was happening in New Gloucester at the same time. The mutual-aid partners involved were Freeport Fire Rescue, Brunswick Fire Department, Lisbon Fire Department, Auburn Fire Department, Topsham Fire & Rescue, Sabattus Fire Department, West Bath Fire/Rescue, Woolwich Fire/Rescue, and the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office.
No injuries were reported among the residents or the firefighters. However, the house was deemed a total loss due to the extent of the fire damage.
The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office started an investigation into the cause of the fire. This office is responsible for determining the origin and cause of fires and collaborates with local agencies when additional investigation is necessary.
This incident demonstrated the importance of regional mutual-aid agreements when multiple major incidents create high demand on fire and rescue resources.
