Ogunquit, Maine — October 4 — The Ogunquit Fire Department was called in mutual aid late Saturday night to help with a marine rescue off Crescent Beach in Wells, close to Gold Ribbon Drive. When Ogunquit's Marine 1 was called in to lead the rescue effort, Wells fire crews had already been keeping an eye on the ship from shore. Three firefighters were on duty when Marine 1 launched into difficult conditions. Approaching the ship was challenging due to rocky shallows, thick fog, and 3–4 foot surf. About 200 yards offshore, the four-person boat was stranded after hitting a rock ledge and starting to take on water.
Rescuers moved quickly. Two victims were recovered by Marine 1 crews on their initial attempt, but the damaged ship was still wedged between breakers and a rock ledge. They were able to free the craft and save the other two people after a lot of work. Marine 1 took all four to Wells Harbor, where the Wells Fire Department and Wells EMS performed medical assessments. Two of the victims were only slightly hurt.
