South Berwick, Maine — October 10 —The Marshwood High School school resource officer notified the South Berwick Fire Department of a minor fire involving a student's cellphone just after 10:00 a.m. After the student reported dropping her phone on the floor while walking to class, Chief Hamel arrived and met with the student and school personnel. Shortly afterward, the lithium-ion battery of the phone started to swell and release smoke. The phone's screen and case were harmed by the enlarged battery, which melted plastic parts when the temperature rose. The student took the gadget out of the building right away and put it outside, where it cooled safely and incident-free. No injuries occurred, and the school structure sustained no damage. The phone was declared a total loss.
