Wells, Maine — October 4 — The Wells Maine Fire Department responded Saturday evening to a distress call involving a marine vessel stuck on rocks near Gold Ribbon Drive, roughly 200 yards offshore. Firefighters arriving first on scene reported four people aboard the 23-foot vessel, which had struck a rock ledge and begun taking on water. Wells Fire took command and asked the U.S. Coast Guard and Marine 1 of Ogunquit for help. The marine units found it challenging to navigate the surf zone because of the rocky conditions, 3–4 foot surf, and heavy fog.
In spite of these difficulties, Marine 1 managed to save two of the victims in the first attempt. Further access was delayed by the damaged vessel, which was wedged between rocks and breakers. Following more work, the two people who were left were safely recovered and taken to Wells Harbor, where they were assessed by Wells EMS. Two victims reportedly suffered minor injuries. The U.S. Coast Guard, Ogunquit Fire Department, Wells Dispatch, Wells Police, and Wells EMS were recognized by the Wells Fire Department for their assistance in planning and carrying out the rescue.
