Bernville, PA - Volunteer firefighters mounted a massive rural water shuttle operation and interior search early Friday afternoon after a working house fire with reported entrapment broke out along Gernert Lane.
At 12:58 p.m. on September 25, 2026, regional fire departments were dispatched to a reported dwelling fire at 8 Gernert Lane in North Heidelberg Township. Tanker 29 of the Bernville Community Fire Company arrived first to find heavy flames showing from the Alpha/Bravo (front and left) corners of a two-story, single-family home.
Faced with severe fire conditions and initial reports that an occupant may be trapped inside, Chief 29 established command and immediately upgraded the assignment to summon additional mutual aid resources, tankers, and manpower to the rural location.
Arriving units executed coordinated rural water supply and fireground tactics: Tanker 52 and Ladder 30 pushed up the long driveway into position, while Engine 29 executed a reverse lay, dropping 1,000 feet of five-inch large-diameter hose back toward the main roadway.
Because municipal hydrants were unavailable, incident commanders established an extensive continuous tanker shuttle operation. Engine 66 relocated to Bernville's Station 29, establishing a dedicated fill site at a municipal water tank to continuously reload shuttling tankers.
Incoming mutual aid companies staged their apparatus, sending all available manpower forward to assist interior search, ventilation, and suppression lines. Firefighters operated on the fireground for roughly three hours before fully knocking down the blaze and completing overhaul operations.
The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal responded to the scene and is actively investigating to determine the origin and cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.
