Statewide Burn Ban Announced in New York
Oct. 2, 2025 — Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) have announced a statewide burn ban in effect from October 2 through October 15, citing dry conditions and an elevated risk of wildfire. Officials said the situation will be re-evaluated before the expiration date.
Under the ban, the following are prohibited:
- Burning of brush or debris
- Uncontained fires, including campfires
- Open fires used for cooking
- Burning garbage or leaves (already prohibited year-round)
Exceptions are allowed for certain small, contained fires. Backyard fire pits and campfires under three feet high and four feet wide may be used, as well as small, controlled cooking fires.
The DEC urges residents to take the ban seriously. Following the restrictions will help reduce the risk of wildfire, protect water supplies, and ensure the safety of both communities and first responders.
