Warren, R.I. — September 18 — On Thursday night, the Warren Fire Department conducted a vehicle extrication training session to provide both seasoned and novice members with practical experience in rescue methods. Two vehicles that were set up to mimic a real crash situation were stabilized by crews. In order to create access for a simulated rescue, firefighters practiced using hydraulic rescue tools, also referred to as the "Jaws of Life," to break glass, pop doors, cut hinges, and roll back an automobile's roof. In order to release a simulated occupant whose legs were stuck beneath the dashboard, the training also involved a dash roll/lift.
Newer members were able to concentrate on technique and safety by practicing tool handling in a simpler setting using a minivan as a training prop. The importance of readiness through routine drills was highlighted when, ironically, crews responded to a real-world incident shortly after the training ended, involving a car that struck a tree close to the training site.
