Two Rescued Above Fire Floor on West End Court; Monmouth Beach Tower Ladder Assists

Monmouth Beach, NJ - Firefighters executed multiple daring upper-floor rescues early Wednesday morning as a fast-moving second-alarm fire swept through a home situated directly adjacent to the historic cottage where rock legend Bruce Springsteen composed his iconic Born to Run album.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on September 23, 2026, the Monmouth County Communications Center began dispatching companies to West End Court following reports of a working structural fire. First-arriving units encountered heavy smoke and advancing flames, with emergency dispatchers confirming that multiple residents were trapped on the upper floors above the fire.

On-duty Long Branch firefighters mounted an aggressive, immediate interior search-and-rescue effort under high-heat, heavy-smoke conditions, successfully performing two heroic rescues of occupants trapped above the seat of the fire.

Given the rapid fire spread, structural complexity, and close proximity of neighboring structures—including the famous 7½ West End Court bungalow where Springsteen penned Born to Run in the mid-1970s—incident commanders quickly struck a second alarm to bring regional mutual aid assets to the scene.

Among the mutual aid companies requested, the Monmouth Beach Fire Department mobilized Ladder 33 (3391) and a full crew to the fireground. Monmouth Beach personnel put their tower ladder into service, deploying elevated master streams and conducting coordinated exterior fire suppression to control vertical extension and protect surrounding exposures.

Following prolonged firefighting and extensive overhaul operations, Monmouth Beach crews brought the tower ladder down and returned to their Beach Road headquarters at approximately 9:00 a.m. While the involved residence suffered severe fire damage, the adjacent historic Springsteen cottage was successfully spared from structural damage
