Interstate 287 Commute Disrupted by Fully Involved Pickup Truck Fire in South Plainfield

S Plainfield, NJ - Firefighters from South Plainfield and neighboring Edison responded to Interstate 287 on Monday evening after an intense vehicle fire completely engulfed the cab of a pickup truck along the highway.

At approximately 6:59 p.m. on September 14, emergency dispatchers alerted the South Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department and Edison Firefighters (IAFF Local 1197) to reports of an active vehicle blaze on Route 287 between Exits 3 and 4.

South Plainfield Deputy 1 arrived first on the highway shoulder to find a pickup truck heavily compromised by fire, with the passenger cab fully involved in flames.

South Plainfield Engine 4 arrived shortly after alongside Edison Engines 2 and 4 to initiate suppression operations. Firefighters stretched an 1 3/4-inch handline across the shoulder, launching an aggressive attack to knock down the flames and prevent fuel tank failure or spread into adjacent brush along the highway corridor.

Responders quickly brought the fire under control and overhauled the vehicle without reported injury.
