BLUE MOUNTAIN, N.Y., Sept. 16, 2025 — The Blue Mountain Volunteer Fire Department credited alert hikers with helping prevent a potentially serious incident on the Grassy Pond trail Tuesday.
Hikers discovered a ground fire just off the main trail and quickly reported it. Firefighters responded and were able to knock down the flames before they spread. Officials believe the blaze likely stemmed from a campfire, though its location away from the main path made it less likely to be spotted without the hikers’ intervention.
“Our crew was able to prevent what could have been a very large incident if this fire had gone undetected,” the department said, thanking the hikers for their vigilance.
