One Burned, 15 Displaced in Rapidly Spreading Meadow Street Apartment Fire

Danbury, CT - A resident was hospitalized with burns and smoke inhalation, and 15 people were left displaced Monday afternoon after a two-alarm fire swept through the upper level of a multi-family home on Meadow Street.

At approximately 4:00 p.m. on September 21, Danbury Fire Dispatch alerted units to a confirmed structure fire along Meadow Street. Engine 23 arrived first due to find heavy, active fire conditions burning on the third floor of a large three-family residence.

Given the advanced fire load and the building’s dense multi-unit occupancy, command quickly escalated the incident to a second alarm to surge additional frontline personnel and apparatus to the scene. Firefighters launched an immediate, aggressive interior attack to knock down the flames on the top level while residents were actively fleeing the lower floors.

With initial reports indicating that someone might remain trapped inside the smoke-filled building, crews pushed through intense heat to execute systematic primary and secondary search sweeps across all three living levels. Firefighters ultimately accounted for all occupants, confirming everyone had escaped the structure.

Paramedics treated one adult resident on the fireground for burn injuries and smoke inhalation before transporting them by ambulance to the Danbury Hospital emergency department. The victim's condition has not been made public.

The multi-unit blaze caused significant structural damage, displacing a total of 15 residents across the three apartments. The Danbury Office of Emergency Management mobilized to the scene to assist the American Red Cross in coordinating emergency sheltering, food, and clothing relief for the impacted families.

The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation by the Danbury Fire Marshal’s Office.
