Tragedy in Monroe: Two-Story Home Engulfed in Flames; One Deceased and Pet Lost

Monroe, CT - An adult resident and a family dog died early Monday morning after an intense fire ripped through a two-story home in the town's Stevenson district, drawing a multi-town tanker shuttle to supply water in the unhydranted neighborhood.

Just before midnight on September 21, volunteer firefighters across the Town of Monroe were alerted to a reported structural blaze on Cottage Street. First-arriving units encountered heavy flames consuming a two-story residential dwelling, with substantial portions of the structure already heavily engulfed upon arrival.

Crews advanced attack lines and initiated primary searches of the residence under severe heat and fire conditions. During firefighting operations, responders located a deceased adult occupant and a deceased dog inside the home. Because the neighborhood lacks municipal fire hydrants, incident commanders immediately dispatched a tanker task force, summoning mutual aid water tenders from neighboring communities to establish a continuous rural water shuttle.

Supplemental firefighters were also called in to bolster on-scene suppression crews and provide coverage for Monroe fire stations during the extended operation. Firefighters operated through the night, dousing hot spots and overhauling collapsed framing well into Monday morning. No firefighter injuries were reported.

Personnel from the Monroe Police Department, Monroe EMS, and the local Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the fireground, with the Fire Marshal leading the formal investigation into the origin and cause of the fatal blaze.
