Technical Rescue Activated After Occupant Trapped in Elevator Shaft at Hasbrouck Heights Hilton

Specialized technical rescue teams mobilized Saturday morning to execute a complex elevator extraction at the local Hilton Hotel after a passenger became trapped inside an elevator cab stuck in a blind shaft between levels.

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on September 19, the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department was dispatched to the multi-story hotel facility following emergency reports of a stalled elevator car with an occupant trapped inside. Arriving first on the scene, Chief 61 conducted an initial reconnaissance of the hoistway and discovered the cab was lodged firmly between the first floor and the basement levels, in a position where the doors could not be accessed or operated from either landing.

Recognizing the tactical challenges of accessing the stuck cab within the enclosed shaft, command transmitted a Signal 10-30 to activate a regional Technical Rescue assignment. Units from the City of Hackensack Fire Department—equipped with specialized rigging gear, heavy extrication tools, and technical search equipment—were dispatched to join Hasbrouck Heights personnel at the scene.

Working in tight coordination, technical rescue specialists and local firefighters secured the elevator machinery, locked out electrical power feeds, and initiated vertical shaft access procedures to reach the stalled car, safely extract the occupant, and return the equipment to hotel engineering personnel.
