Air Conditioner Blaze Extends into Home, Prompting Working Fire Assignment in Wyckoff

Wyckoff, NJ - Firefighters from the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department and regional mutual aid companies brought a fast-moving residential fire under control Tuesday afternoon after an exterior air conditioning unit and connected electrical wiring caught fire and extended into a home.

On the afternoon of September 15, emergency dispatchers alerted the department to a confirmed electrical fire involving an air conditioning unit that was actively running into the structural framing of a private dwelling. Given the immediate threat of rapid internal spread, command quickly upgraded the response to a full working fire assignment.

First-due companies advanced attack handlines to quickly knock down the exterior fire before pushing inside to halt the flames traveling through the walls. Responding personnel conducted extensive thermal imaging and opened up structural cavities surrounding the unit to check for hidden fire extension, successfully stopping the spread before it could compromise the home's interior living spaces. High-powered fans were subsequently deployed to clear the residence of accumulated smoke and toxic gases.

The operational response drew full participation from Wyckoff’s internal companies—Wyckoff Protection Fire Company 1, Community Engine Co. 2, and Sicomac Engine Co. 3—alongside mutual aid support dispatched through Northwest Bergen Mutual Aid and Bergen County Battalion 4. Thanks to the rapid initial attack and coordinated ventilation efforts, the incident was brought under control with structural damage kept to a minimum.
