Flames Knocked Down on Southern State Parkway; Scene Transferred to State Police

Islip, NY - Firefighters quickly knocked down an active vehicle fire late Sunday night along the eastbound lanes of the Southern State Parkway near the Islip Avenue interchange in southern Suffolk County.

Shortly after 11:00 p.m. on September 13, the Islip Fire Department was dispatched following reports of an automobile fire on the parkway just west of the off-ramp for southbound Islip Avenue (Exit 43S).

First-arriving apparatus located a fully involved vehicle on the shoulder. The occupants had successfully evacuated the burning car prior to the arrival of emergency crews and reported no injuries.

Firefighters deployed a handline, quickly suppressing the flames and preventing the fire from spreading into adjacent roadside brush.

Once the vehicle was completely overhauled and secured, fire department units cleared the parkway and transferred the scene to the New York State Police for traffic control, vehicle removal, and investigation.
