A residential structure fire that began in a detached garage and extended to a nearby home brought firefighters from Belgrade and surrounding communities to the scene for mutual-aid operations.

On Wednesday afternoon, September 16, 2026, the Belgrade Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 983 Smithfield Road in Belgrade, Maine. Initial reports indicated thick black smoke coming from the roof. Belgrade firefighters were assisted by Oakland Fire Rescue, which responded with additional personnel and equipment to support suppression operations.

The residents were home when the fire began but were able to evacuate safely. No injuries were reported. Firefighters worked to control the fire involving the garage and residence while limiting further extension.

The Maine State Fire Marshal's Office investigated the incident and determined that the fire originated in the garage before spreading to the house. Investigators reported that welding had taken place in the garage shortly before the fire was discovered. However, the exact cause could not be determined because of the extent of the damage.
