Second-Alarm Struck at Providence High-Rise Fire

PROVIDENCE, RI - Around 11:30 A.M. on the morning of Thursday, September 6th, the Providence Fire Department responded to Hillside Village at 40 Leander Street for a box alarm.

Companies arrived to find nothing showing from the six-story apartment building. Engine-6 found the alarm panel showed floor-4. As they arrived to the fourth floor to investigate, they encountered smoke and sprinkler activation in Apartment 416.

A kitchen fire was discovered in Apartment 416 on the fourth floor. As a precaution, Battalion-2 struck a second-alarm. Crews worked to knock down the fire and evacuate all of the remaining occupants of the building. The heavy fire was quickly knocked down with the use of a hand line and the sprinkler system.

One victim on the third floor required EMS due to a medical problem, but it was unsure if it was related to the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
