Three-Alarm Fire Displaces 22 in New Brunswick

New Brunswick, N.J. — September 8 —A three-alarm fire at a three-story, eight-unit residential structure at 88 Louis Street in New Brunswick prompted firefighters from multiple Middlesex County units to arrive on Tuesday afternoon.

When the incident was reported at around 1:24 p.m., the New Brunswick incident Department was the first to arrive. After fighting the fire for over four hours, it was finally contained at 5:13 p.m.

The building's twenty-two occupants, including a number of Rutgers University students, were forced to relocate. There were no recorded injuries to people. Two firemen from New Brunswick and one from a mutual-aid agency were among the three who sustained minor injuries.

Edison, East Franklin, North Brunswick, and East Brunswick contributed mutual help. According to the East Franklin Fire Department, at around 1:38 p.m., Ladder 27, which was manned by five firemen in addition to other department units, was sent to 88 Louis Street to help with the working structure fire.

New Brunswick units from Cars 21, 22, 23, 25, 29, 204, and 205, as well as Engines 1, 2, and 5 and Ladder 1, were part in the response. In response, Edison produced Cars 8 and Engines 4 and 6. Engine 105 was deployed by North Brunswick, while Ladder 809 was furnished by East Brunswick.

Middlesex County fire coordinators, the New Brunswick Police Department, and the New Brunswick Office of Emergency Management were additional resources.

Other agencies assisted in maintaining emergency coverage in New Brunswick as local businesses worked at the fire. Monroe Ladder 23, Sayreville Truck 7, North Stelton Engine 262, and East Franklin Engine 272 were among those assignments.

After the fire was contained, firefighters stayed on the scene to finish the overhaul and look for any hot spots. The cause of the fire is still being looked into.
