Firefighters Halt 2nd-Alarm Structure Fire on 8th Street and Rescue Trapped Kitten

Piscataway, NJ — Firefighters mounted an aggressive suppression attack and successfully pulled a trapped kitten from a burning residence during an early morning, second-alarm structure fire on 8th Street.

The incident began at approximately 2:30 a.m. when the New Market Fire Department was initially dispatched on a 1/3 box assignment. First-arriving Chief 40 and Chief 60 encountered heavy fire conditions venting from the rear of the residential structure, immediately prompting command to upgrade the incident to a first alarm.

On August 30, operating companies in Middlesex County swiftly initiated fireground operations to contain the spreading fire. Crews assigned to Truck 66, Engine 41, and Engine 63 established a secure municipal water supply while stretching primary attack lines and secondary backup lines to confront the bulk of the fire.

Due to the intense heat, volume of fire, and heavy workload, incident command transmitted a second alarm to bring additional mutual aid personnel to the scene for suppression support and relief.

While suppression crews knocked down the main body of fire, interior teams conducted primary and secondary searches to confirm no residents were trapped. During the sweep, a firefighter located a live kitten inside the smoke-filled building and safely carried it outside, reuniting the pet unharmed with its owner.

Crews completed extensive overhaul operations, checking wall cavities and void spaces to extinguish lingering hot spots and prevent rekindling. The New Market Fire Department commended all operating companies and expressed appreciation to the mutual aid departments that provided station coverage during the incident.
