Firefighters Pinpoint Basement HVAC Malfunction to Clear Heavy Smoke from Brooklawn Residence

Westville, NJ - Fire crews quickly isolated and resolved an interior smoke condition inside a Brooklawn residence before the incident could escalate into a major structure fire.

Brooklawn Task Force 344 was dispatched at 6:33 PM (18:33 hrs) on August 27, 2026, to 109 3rd Street in Camden County following an emergency call reporting a home filling with heavy smoke from an unknown origin. The initial assignment mobilized a robust response including Engines 733, 3443, and 4; Squad 5; Ladder 736; Utility 3445; Chiefs 701 and 702; and Battalion 5.

First-arriving Gloucester City Battalion 5 and Westville Chief 701 confirmed an active smoke condition permeating the living spaces of the dwelling. Crews from Engines 3443 and 733 alongside Squad 5 established a primary water supply line and made entry to perform a thorough interior search and investigation.

Firefighters traced the smoke to the basement, where they discovered a burned-out electric motor within the home's HVAC system. Crew members isolated the malfunctioning mechanical unit to eliminate further fire extension, while Ladder 736 deployed positive-pressure ventilation (PPV) fans to clear heavy smoke from the structure. Once atmospheric checks were clear and the investigation wrapped up, incident command turned the residence back over to the homeowner.
