WOOLWICH, Maine (Aug. 22, 2025) — A woods fire on the north end of Woolwich drew a large mutual aid response Friday afternoon before crews brought it under control later that night, officials said.
Woolwich Fire/Rescue reported the blaze was caused by illegal burning during high fire danger conditions. The Maine Forest Service is investigating.
A Forest Service helicopter in the area made several water drops that helped slow the flames as local units arrived. Dozens of volunteer firefighters from across the region worked into the night to contain the fire.
Support came from the Salvation Army, Sagadahoc County Emergency Management Agency, and residents who provided food and cold drinks for responders.
Crews contained the fire Friday night after first responding in the afternoon.
