MILFORD, Conn. (Aug. 1, 2025) — Milford Fire Department marine units rescued a kayaker Friday night after the person was heard calling for help off Walnut Beach, officials said.

A passerby on shore called 911 around 10:15 p.m. after hearing cries from the water. Engine 4 arrived on scene and confirmed the calls for help, guiding Marine 2 toward the swimmer.

Crews located the kayaker several hundred yards offshore. The person had been overturned by a larger vessel’s wake and was believed to have been in the water for about an hour.

Marine 2 brought the kayaker to Milford Harbor, where the patient was transferred to a medic unit and taken to a nearby hospital. Fire officials said there were no apparent injuries.

The department said the rescue closely mirrored recent water rescue training conducted by all four shifts and reminded the public of the importance of wearing a Coast Guard–approved life jacket during water activities.
