Body recovered after drowning in Candlewood Lake, officials say

SHERMAN, Conn. (Friday, Aug. 15, 2025) — A man who disappeared after jumping from a boat into Candlewood Lake was recovered Saturday afternoon following an extensive two-day search involving multiple regional dive and rescue teams, officials said.
The swimmer was reported missing around 2:32 p.m. Friday near Deer Island, prompting Sherman Volunteer Fire Department to launch two rescue boats and request widespread mutual aid. Crews from New Milford, New Fairfield, Danbury, Brookfield and Newtown joined in, along with state police, DEEP EnCon Police and the Candlewood Lake Authority Marine Patrol.
Search operations continued into Friday evening before being suspended around 8:30 p.m. Divers and additional resources resumed the effort Saturday morning. At 3 p.m., divers located and recovered the victim, authorities said.
The incident remains under investigation by Connecticut DEEP and EnCon Police.
“We extend our gratitude to all participating agencies for their professional coordination and dedication,” the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department said in a statement, adding condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
