LITTLE VALLEY, N.Y. (Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025) — Fifteen riders were safely rescued after a swing ride malfunctioned during the closing hours of the Cattaraugus County Fair, officials said.

The incident occurred Saturday evening, prompting a response from multiple agencies, including the Ellicottville and Randolph fire departments, Cattaraugus County Fair EMS and Fire volunteers, and deputies from the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office. Firefighters used equipment to bring the riders down without injury, according to officials.

State labor authorities confirmed that all rides had passed inspection prior to the fair. One ride, however, had a prior violation requiring repair, though it was not immediately clear if that was related to Saturday’s malfunction.

Little Valley Fire Chief David Hammond coordinated the response. “All agencies worked together quickly and professionally to bring everyone down safely,” he said.

The fair concluded without further incident.
