BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (Tuesday, July 22, 2025) — Firefighters in Bloomfield contained a small fire Tuesday after a charging battery ignited inside a Franklin Street residence, officials said.

Crews arrived to find light smoke coming from the home. Firefighters quickly located the source—a battery that had caught fire while charging—and extinguished it before it could spread, according to the department.

The homeowners were inside at the time and promptly called 911. No injuries were reported, and damage was limited.

Bloomfield officials reminded residents to use caution when charging batteries, especially lithium-ion types. Safety guidelines include following manufacturer instructions and avoiding charging batteries unattended or in unsafe locations.

The Belleville Fire Department and Nutley FMBA Local 44 provided automatic aid.
