Regional Mutual Aid Strengthens Response to Five-Alarm Fire

Jersey City firefighters, assisted by Bayonne crews, operated at a residential fire on Stegman Street that extended from a garage into the upper floors and roof of the structure.

The fire was reported at approximately 5:30 p.m. on July 31, 2026, in Jersey City, New Jersey. Jersey City Fire Department companies encountered heavy fire originating in a garage and extending upward through the building. A second alarm was transmitted, with additional alarms requested as conditions and manpower needs increased.

As conditions deteriorated, command ordered firefighters out of the structure at approximately 5:50 p.m. The incident eventually reached five alarms, bringing additional personnel and rehabilitation resources to the scene. Bayonne firefighters responded on mutual aid and operated alongside Jersey City companies.

Fire Chief Jack Johnson said high humidity took a toll on the initial companies, contributing to the need for additional alarms and relief crews. Fire had also extended into concealed spaces in the walls and roof, requiring extensive opening-up and overhaul. Approximately 80 firefighters operated during the incident, and the fire was brought under control in about 90 minutes.

Six firefighters suffered minor smoke-inhalation injuries, and one resident was transported with minor injuries. The fire affected two buildings and displaced 15 residents from four families. The cause remained under investigation.
