— September 13, 2026 — On Sunday morning, firefighters saved the single person inside a vehicle that got trapped in floodwaters in Closter, as heavy rain triggered widespread flooding throughout Bergen County.

The incident took place as Demarest firefighters responded to flood-related emergencies in both Demarest and Haworth. The department’s Squad Company was then called to Closter to respond to a report of a vehicle that was occupied and trapped in floodwater.

Technicians from Demarest specializing in swift-water rescue arrived and extracted the vehicle’s only occupant. The person was reported to have sustained no injuries.

The rescue took place while northern New Jersey was experiencing heavy rainfall. On September 13, the National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for northeastern Bergen County, including Closter, due to thunderstorms that brought heavy rain. At one point, the National Weather Service noted that 1.5 to 4 inches of rain had already fallen in parts of the warned region, with more rain still possible.
