Lightning-Related Boat Fire Controlled in Mallett’s Bay

Colchester, VT - The Colchester Fire Department responded with Colchester Rescue Squad, Colchester Technical Rescue, and Colchester Police Department to a reported boat fire in Mallett’s Bay, initially dispatched with an unknown location.
Fireboat 5 located the vessel near Bayside Park and found the fire had already been largely extinguished by a nearby boater prior to arrival. Crews conducted a thorough check for remaining hot spots and confirmed no additional hazards.
Both occupants remained safely aboard the vessel with no injuries reported. The fire is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike to the mast, igniting materials in the aft storage compartment.
