A reported natural-gas explosion sparked a second-alarm fire in a two-story mixed-occupancy building, bringing a large mutual-aid response from departments in New York and New Jersey.
The July 22, 2026 incident occurred at 265 Orange Turnpike in Sloatsburg, NY, near the Rockland-Orange county line. Arriving personnel encountered heavy fire, with one worker suffering serious burn injuries. The victim was transported by medical helicopter to Westchester Medical Center.
Sloatsburg and Tuxedo firefighters operated with mutual-aid companies from Hillburn, Suffern, Monsey, Monroe, Greenwood Lake, Washingtonville and Woodbury, along with Mahwah, NJ. Monsey also provided coverage for the Sloatsburg Fire District while companies operated at the scene.
The fire building was within the Sloatsburg Fire District, immediately adjacent to Tuxedo's response area. Route 17 was closed during operations as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control. The cause of the explosion and fire remained under investigation.
