On July 1, at around 5:36 a.m., the Stony Brook Fire Department responded to a reported house fire caused by a lightning strike.

Chief Seelin oversaw interior activities, while Chief McNeil established command. Engine 4 established a water supply from a nearby hydrant as Ladder 16 stood in front of the house. After turning off the house's electricity and using a thermal imaging camera to find hidden heat inside a wall, firefighters found burnt wiring, electrical outlets, and structural elements.

By around 6:01 a.m., the situation had been contained, saving the house from more harm.
