Former Car Wash Burns in Norwich

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

At 5:08 PM on Tuesday, 7/22/2025 the East Great Plain Fire Department with Norwich’s Engine 3, Truck 1 and Battalion 1 were dispatched to 577 West Main Street the former Colonial Car Wash for flames coming from the roof. Dispatch said they were taking multiple calls and could see it on the city cameras, so they transmitted the working fire adding the Mohegan Tribal FAST, American Ambulance and Norwich Public Utilities.

Engine 3 arrived at 5:12 reporting heavy fire from the roof and that they were stretching a 2.5” hose line. Truck 1 set up for defensive operations on the “Alpha/Delta” corner and awaited the water supply, while Squad A laid in from the hydrant. Early in the incident, live power lines came down in the front, which Norwich Public Utilities addressed.

Engine 52 established a second water supply and fed Ladder 5 who positioned on the “Alpha/Bravo” corner. Companies operated 2 ladder pipes and 3 hand lines, which darkened the bulk of the fire in 15 minutes. Yantic Engine 33 pumped the hydrant for Ladder 5 and the Mohegan Tribal Fire Department provided the FAST. The Norwich Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
