Sheldon, VT. — July 6 — Two kayakers capsized in Class III rapids on the Missisquoi River, prompting the Sheldon Fire Department to react to Mill Street beneath the paper mill. While one kayaker made it safely to land, the other was stuck on a boulder in the swift-moving water. Sheldon firefighters set up downstream safety positions while Colchester Technical Rescue's swiftwater rescue unit reacted.

The stranded kayaker was successfully brought to shore by rescue personnel using a pendulum rescue technique after they had spanned a portion of the river and given safety gear and a rescue line. There were no reported injuries. During water emergencies, the reaction demonstrated the importance of regional swiftwater rescue training, coordination, and mutual aid.
