Multi-Agency Rescue Safely Extricates Injured Hiker in Remote Terrain
Rangeley, ME - The Rangeley Fire Rescue responded to a report of an injured hiker in the Height of Land area, where limited information and challenging terrain prompted a coordinated technical rescue response. Mutual aid was requested from the Phillips Fire Department and Eustis Maine Fire Department due to the complexity of the incident.
Initial crews gathered information from bystanders before deploying a hasty team with medical and rescue equipment. The patient, who had suffered a fall with a suspected head injury, was located and assessed, while additional rescuers entered the area with specialized equipment to assist with extrication.
Due to steep and hazardous terrain, rescuers determined that returning along the original path posed significant risk. An alternate downhill route was identified and utilized to safely carry the patient to a nearby roadway, where care was transferred to MaineHealth EMS.
