MASTIC BEACH, NY - On Sunday, July 3rd, a lifeguard was doing a training exercise when he was bitten in the chest and hand by a shark at Smith Point Beach. The Smith Point Beach First Aid Squad bandaged him up before he was transported to Southside Hospital for further treatment. Smith Point Beach was closed for swimming along with other beaches in the surrounding area. Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Service Drone Team was requested to the scene for an aerial view to look for the shark while Suffolk County PD Marine Mike and Smith Point Ocean Rescue team's jet ski patrolled the water. The lifeguard, identified as Zack Gallo, has been a lifeguard with the Smith Point Ocean Rescue Team for 10 years. He is expected to make a full recovery.
