On Wednesday, July 6, Escambia County Fire Rescue honored firefighter and paramedic Willis "Bill" Halfacre with a retirement ceremony after 41 years of faithful and dedicated service as a first responder.

Firefighter and paramedic Bill Halfacre began his fire service career as a volunteer firefighter with Ensley Volunteer Fire Department in January 1981.

In 1989, FF Halfacre began part-time employment with Escambia County EMS as an emergency medical technician, eventually becoming a paramedic in May 1994.

FF Halfacre joined Escambia County Fire Rescue full-time in January 2000. Throughout his career, FF Halfacre received his HAZMAT certification, Fire Officer II certification, Live Fire Training Instructor certification, Pump Operator certification and his AAS degree in Fire Science from Pensacola State College.

FF Halfacre has been married to his bride, Cassandra, since 2005. He retires with 41 years of service to the citizens of Escambia County.

"Well, I made it," said FF Halfacre during the ceremony. "I appreciate everyone for being here today, and I am so thankful to Escambia County for everything they have done for me. They will always be remembered."

Family, friends, colleagues, local elected officials, local law enforcement and fire partners from nearby communities gathered in celebration of FF Halfacre. Escambia County District 4 Commissioner Robert Bender presented FF Halfacre with an official proclamation, while also receiving a Certificate of Recognition from the office of Rep. Michelle Salzman.

FF Halfacre, reflecting on his time with ECFR, spoke on what it takes to be a firefighter in Escambia County: "It takes a lot of mentality. You need to hold yourself to a higher standard. You need to be willing to step up to the plate if you want to be a firefighter today."

The Board of County Commissioners expresses its appreciation to Firefighter Bill Halfacre for his 41 years of a first responder to the citizens of Escambia County.
