WESTBROOKVILLE, NY -- Westbrookville Volunteer Fire Company firefighter Louis Tunno, a graduating Port Jervis School District Class of 2026 senior, was awarded a $1500 scholarship this week. The scholarship was given by the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) for outstanding academic achievement, distinguished service to his community, and exemplary leadership provided by Tunno during his high school years.

Eric Orr, a FASNY Director, attended a special gathering of firefighters, PJSD personnel, and family and friends of Tunno on Tuesday evening, June 9, to present the college-bound senior with the Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Memorial FASNY Volunteer Scholarship.

Orr noted that Tunno was one of 25 recipients selected for a $1500 scholarship from 100 applications received by FASNY from across New York State. While taking many fire classes and completing Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and National Firefighter certification, Tunno maintained high honor roll grades in high school and C-Tech while training and serving as an active WVFC firefighter.

Tunno plans to attend SUNY Delhi this fall to study Electrical Engineering and Electrical Lineman, and will continue to volunteer as firefighter in the Delhi area

Tunno, as well as his parents Ralph “Bo” and Kim Tunno, are all active volunteers in the Westbrookville community, including Ralph as current WVFC Chief. Tunno’s parents joined Orr, Otisville Past Chief Robbie Coppola, Howells Past Chief Jerome Neuman, Highland Lake Chief Warren Wagner, Middletown Past Chief Don Luis, PJHS Principal Anthony Lazzaro and teachers Kelly Decker and Rebecca Fedorick, and other guests at the special scholarship presentation to Tunno.

WVFC officers and members would like to congratulate Tunno for winning such a prestigious award and know he will be missed when he heads off to SUNY Delhi in August.
