SOUTH HACKENSACK, NJ - A fire that apparently started on the rear deck damaged a South Hackensack home on the afternoon of May 31st.
At approximately 3:04 P.M., dispatch was given to firefighters for 7 4th Ave. on a reported working fire. First arriving engine company 403 was met with heavy smoke and fire from the rear side of the structure of a two-story home and transmitted a 2nd alarm. An engine and ladder from Hackensack arrived quickly and went to work.
Hackensack Deputy Chief Justin Derevyanik arrived and assumed command until the arrival of South Hackensack Chief of Dept. Maceri. Fire made its way into the attic of the duplex home. After firefighters vented the roof, fire began to vent through it. Interior companies got hand lines in place to knock down the fire in the attic area. The heavy fire was knocked down quickly after, and all fire was fully extinguished in about one hour.
Mutual aid from Carlstadt, Hackensack, Hasbrouck Heights, Little Ferry, Moonachie and Wood-Ridge assisted on the scene, along with Bergen County EMS, the Moonachie First Aid & Rescue Squad's fire rehab unit and County Wide Emergency Response Team. Mutual aid covering at the firehouse included Wallington and Maywood.
No injuries were reported. The cause is still being investigated.
