This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

The Birdsboro-Union Fire Department and several mutual aid agencies responded to a reported structure fire in the 200 block of Mullen Road in Union Township at around 11:38 a.m. on May 21.

Officials said responding crews were advised by Berks DES that several explosions had occurred inside the building. Firefighters arrived and verified that a 50-by-50-foot garage was totally immersed in a working fire. Engine 24 and Quint 6 came after Engine 7, which was the first due engine. While creating a water supply, crews used a blitz fire monitor and many handlines to safeguard adjacent exposures. Quint 6 activated its master stream after obtaining a reliable water supply.

Firefighters worked alongside the property owner, who assisted with overhaul operations using equipment on site. Two fill sites were established at Scott’s Run Lake and High Point Baptist Academy to support water shuttle operations. The department thanked all responding agencies and also recognized Boyertown Area Fire and Rescue for providing station coverage and handling two motor vehicle accidents in Union Township during the incident.
