A massive five alarm fire gutted the long vacant and EPA Superfund Site of the Galaxie Chemical Corporation in Paterson on April 3rd

Due to multiple calls, a full assignment was dispatched at 11:30 PM to Presidential Boulevard and North Straight Street. Fire was throughout a 200 X 300 one story brick factory. BC - 3 transmitted both the second and third alarms on arrival. All incoming engine companies were ordered to hit hydrants. Several were inoperable prompting a fourth alarm for water supply, including from River Street on the opposite side of the Passaic River. Eventually five elevated master streams were operating. An attached  four story brick mill on Haledon Ave. had fire extension on several floors that was extinguished with hand lines.  A fifth alarm was sounded at 12:15. A request to Passaic Valley Water was made to Increase water pressure. County Haz-Mat was called due to possible chemical contamination. All air samples proved negative. Portions of all sides of the structure collapsed. One collapse ruptured a gas line adding to the issues faced.

The flames slowly darkened down and mutual aid began to be released. Fire Department presence lasted throughout the next day. The original fire building was completely gutted. Many vehicles were destroyed as well. The four story vacant brick exposure received relatively minor damage. PSE&G was requested for gas and electrical repairs. Multiple local, state, and federal agencies assisted with the investigation. The building was slated for an immediate demolition. No injuries were reported.  The actual address for the fire building was 28 Piercy St.
