Fatal Residential Fire at Lafayette Green Building 1 Under Investigation

Clinton, CT - Authorities report that a residential fire at Lafayette Green Building 1 resulted in the death of an individual who had been rescued from the apartment earlier in the day.

On 02 March 2026 approximately 10:25 a.m., the Clinton Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from an occupant of Unit D reporting activation of a smoke detector and an odor of smoke. Shortly thereafter, additional 911 calls reported visible smoke and flames coming from a second-floor window.

Fire Department units arrived on scene within three minutes and confirmed an active fire in a second-floor apartment. Crews deployed a hose line into the unit, where they encountered heavy heat and near-zero visibility due to dense smoke conditions. Firefighters located the occupant in the hallway and removed them from the building.

The injured individual was transported by Clinton EMS and Guilford Fire Department paramedics to Yale New Haven Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

The remaining occupants of the three other apartments were not injured but were displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

No firefighter injuries were reported during the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Clinton Fire Marshal’s Office, the Connecticut State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit, and the Clinton Police Department.

Mutual aid was provided by multiple surrounding departments, including Old Saybrook Fire Department, Westbrook Fire Department, Madison Hose Company No. 1, Madison Emergency Medical Services, and Guilford Fire Department.
