Rapid Response Averts Potentially Dangerous Hood System Fire

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Littleton, NH - On Wednesday, March 18 at 8:21 a.m., the Littleton Fire Department was dispatched by Grafton County to 582 Meadow Street in Littleton following a report of a kitchen fire. Engine 1 and Ambulance 3, staffed by C Shift, responded along with Cars 1 and 2. Mutual aid was also requested from Bethlehem, Franconia, Lisbon, and St. Johnsbury as part of the first alarm assignment.

Upon arrival, Car 2 established command at the scene. Firefighters from Engine 1 quickly assessed the situation and determined that the fire—located within equipment beneath the kitchen hood system—had already been extinguished. Based on this evaluation, command canceled the first alarm response and kept Engine 1 on scene. All responding units returned to service shortly after 9:00 a.m.

According to Chief Miller, crews arrived to find the fire contained within the hood system. Employees had acted promptly by calling emergency services and attempting to extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived. He noted that such fires carry a significant risk of spreading rapidly through ventilation systems and potentially extending into the building’s roof. Chief Miller also expressed appreciation for the mutual aid departments that responded, particularly aerial units from Franconia and St. Johnsbury, as the department’s ladder truck remains out of service with no estimated timeline for repair.
