Scrap Metal Fire in Bayonne Contained Without Injuries; Cause Under Investigation

Bayonne, NJ - On 5 March 2026 at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Bayonne Fire Department was dispatched to EMR Metal Recycling, located at 85 East 2nd Street, following reports of a fire. Upon arrival, responding units discovered flames within a pile of scrap metal. Firefighters deployed two aerial ladder pipes to bring the blaze under control.


The fire was successfully contained by 7:48 p.m. No injuries were reported. While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials have stated that it is not considered suspicious.


The Hudson Regional Health Commission responded to the scene and conducted air quality monitoring in nearby residential areas. Authorities confirmed that no environmental hazards were detected. Representatives from the commission also returned to the site the following morning to carry out a follow-up investigation.


Additional agencies present at the scene included the Bayonne Police Department, the City of Bayonne, the Bayonne Department of Public Works, Bayonne UEZ, and the Bayonne School District.
