March 11, 2026 — Watch Hill Fire Department crews responded to a smoke detector activation on Popon Road and discovered a working basement fire shortly after arrival.
Initial units found no visible smoke or fire, but while investigating and attempting to contact homeowners, firefighters detected the odor of smoke. Upon gaining entry, crews located heavy fire in the basement extending toward the first floor.
A first alarm was transmitted, bringing additional resources to the scene. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack, quickly knocking down the bulk of the fire while additional crews conducted searches, which proved negative.
Incoming units were assigned to check for extension and complete overhaul operations.
Crews from Watch Hill and assisting departments remained on scene for an extended period before returning to service. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal and Westerly Police.
