HAWTHORNE, NJ - As Hawthorne Fire Chief Speranza arrived at 16 Cedar Place at 10:23 P.M. on March 20th, heavy fire was involving the rear of a two-and-a-half-story frame dwelling. A second-alarm was immediately transmitted.
The home was on the end of a dead-end street with very limited access. Only two rigs were able to get on to the block with all others on adjoining streets. A two-and-a-half-inch line was stretched to the rear to protect the “D” exposure. Additional lines were advanced in the front door to knock down the heavy fire. Several collapses occurred in the rear, as well as the roof and all members were withdrawn. Companies re-entered soon after and completed knocking down the flames.
The fire was placed under control in one hour, and companies continued overhaul. All residents were accounted for and no serious injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.
