Fire Confined to Single Unit on East Main Street

Norwich, NY — February 14th — The Chenango County Communications Center alerted Norwich Fire Department firefighters at 5:24 PM to respond to a suspected burning odor at 125 East Main Street.
The duty crew came within minutes and reported no obvious smoke or flames. While exploring the building, workers discovered substantial smoke in a third-floor hallway and issued a box alarm assignment indicating a working fire.
Firefighters launched hose lines to locate the fire apartment, where they began suppression and searched for residents. Within 10 minutes, the fire was brought under control and confirmed to be contained to a single empty unit. Additional firefighters assisted with checking for fire extension and evacuating nearby residents. Crews remained on scene for about 30 minutes for salvage, overhaul, and investigation. The fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen area and remains under investigation.
