Adams, NY - Smithville Fire Chief Andy Weldon stated that a barn went up in flames near Smithville on Sunday night, February 24th, killing dozens of calves. The fire went to three alarms before being brought under control. Twelve fire departments were called to the wind-fueled fire scene on County Route 75. Flames shot from the roof of the milk house at Hy-Light Farms. That building was destroyed and part of a barn was also damaged. Fire officials said 50 or 60 calves were killed in the blaze, but most of the farm's 500 cows escaped.
